This great cabinet specimen from Torr Works quarry (aka Merehead quarry) at Cranmore in Somerset is an excellent example with which to explain the mode of occurrence of the rare oxyhalide mineralisation at this locality, now the type locality to eight species.  Within a black, slightly sooty manganese ore pod, a core of white Calcite hosts rich areas of white Hydrocerussite (basic lead carbonate), pale pink Mendipite (lead oxychloride) and the very rare mineral Mereheadite (a complex oxychloride) as rich pale apricot patches to over 2 cm long.  Torr Works quarry is the type locality of Mereheadite and Mendipite is named for the Mendip Hills of Somerset, in which Torr Works quarry is set.  A great Torr Works specimen containing some of Britain’s most unusual mineral species.
