Sulphides, Sulphosalts and Arsenides
Valentinite with Sphalerite, Galena and Quartz
ID:
CC18291
Although the wonderful label accompanying this large miniature proves it is from an old collection, its appearance undoubtedly confirms this. It is strange how such old-time pieces from pre-twentieth century collections have a certain look, but they so often do. A Galena matrix tarnished with age to a dark sooty grey patina is overgrown by Sphalerite and Quartz crystals, plus an approximately 2.5 x 1 cm coverage of cream laths of crystallised Valentinite with a silky lustre. Valentinite is an antimony oxide. The base of the specimen is coated with 1 mm Sphalerite crystals varying from opaque black to semi-transparent burnt tangerine and claret red. The antiquarian label is written in Italian (I think) and perfectly complements this lovely specimen.
