Lustrous and gemmy lilac, interpenetrant-twinned Fluorite crystals measuring to 1.8 cm are aggregated and individually scattered over a translucent, milky white matrix of well developed, squat Quartz crystals from Cambokeels mine in Weardale, County Durham, England.  Cambokeels, originally named Cammock Eals, lies immediately adjacent to the main A689 road, to its south side and between the villages of Westgate and Eastgate.  I visited the site some years ago with Ralph Sutcliffe and it was a sobering thought to look at the adit portal and imagine just what specimens have passed through!  The Fluorite in this specimen has a slight mauve cast and in sunlight is the most stunning violet.  There is no hint of natural fluorescence, a trait characteristic to Cambokeels, but placed beneath LWUV, the Fluorite fluoresces bright purple-lilac.
