ID: CC18734
Uncommon, well-formed, translucent light peppermint green octahedral crystals of Fluorite measuring to 2.5 cm sit on a crystalised drusy surface of slightly pinkish Calcite crystals from the Artenberg quarry at Steinach in the Black Forest, Germany. This large and imposing quarry is readily visible as it has removed half a hillside, whose now exposed face is delineated by horizontal remnant benches. The quarry was worked for gneiss, with mineralisation occurring in Calcite and Quartz veins. Under LWUV the Fluorite fluoresces a reasonably bright lilac-purple and an under-lying layer of slightly yellow Calcite, exposed only around the periphery of the specimen, lends a pale greenish-yellow fluorescent outer ring. An aesthetic and rare specimen from Artenberg quarry where access is now strictly prohibited.
