A terrific specimen from the Archduke Stephan Collection composed of large, stubby equant Vesuvianite crystals set in a groundmass of burnt toffee orange polycrystalline Vesuvianite from Eg (Eeg) at Kristiansand, Vest-Agder, Norway.  The primary Vesuvianite crystals measure up to 1.7 cm long by 2.0 x 1.5 cm in section.  Opaque and very dark brown to black in appearance, under low magnification the prism edges show as translucent greenish-clove brown.  The blocky habit of the display crystals along with their colour contrast against the Vesuvianite matrix resulting in an impressive historic specimen.
Ex. the Mineral Collection of Archduke Stephan Franz Viktor of Hungary (1817 to 1867), with a historic Archduke (Erzherzog) Stephan label incorporating his coat of arms.  This label measures 8.5 x 4.8 cm; it complete (untrimmed) and is numbered 316/44.  A small Carl Rumpff label, dated 1889, is glued to a side of the specimen.  The Archduke label is in very good condition but has been folded once, leaving a single, central, vertical crease.  This specimen is also accompanied with a 7.2 x 7.0 cm beautifully hand written label with the footnote “Coll. C. Rumpff 1889”.
