Dark smoky, rhombic Smithsonite crystals envelope an elongated rib of carmine-red coloured granular Smithsonite that forms the matrix beneath.  The rhombic crystals are typically 1.1 cm on edge and form an interpenetrant jumble of dark glassy crystals with a somewhat greasy lustre.  Examined close-to, each rhomb has a deep root beer smoky core framed by dark chocolaty edges.  The latter is more likely the effect of colour intensity along the crystal edges rather than physical colour concentration.  No matter what the cause, this is a superb Smithsonite of exemplary colour and crystal habit from Tsumeb.
