A really super miniature “Copper Skull” of deformed Native Copper from Cliff mine in Keweenaw County, Upper Michigan, USA.  Copper Skulls are a Keweenaw classic, being an epimorph of Native Copper after rounded conglomeritic pebbles.  Copper mineralisation throughout the Keweenaw Peninsular is associated with the ancient Portage Lake Volcanics, comprising mainly of flood basalts and conglomerates.  Native Copper was sometimes deposited around conglomerate pebbles and if these were subsequently dissolved, there remains a Native Copper cast, colloquially termed a “Copper Skull”.  This specimen is a terrific example.
