An excellent Cuprite from the mines around Redruth in south-west Cornwall.  It is likely that the specimen is from the famous mines in the parish of Gwennap; having the correct appearance for this district.  The specimen is almost entirely composed of perfect octahedral Cuprite crystals measuring 3 to 4 mm but of up to 7 mm on edge.  All crystals have a brilliant metallic lustre and are a silvery-maroon to claret red and in strong light their translucency is apparent.  The Cuprite crystals form a porous mass interspersed with translucent granules of milky Quartz.  A beautiful Cornish Cuprite.
