The Pala Chief mine in San Diego County is another of California’s famous gem tourmaline mines and despite producing Tourmalines in many beautiful colours, it is probably best known for its amazing pink crystals.  This little beauty has a single fuchsia-pink gemmy crystal piecing a stubby Quartz crystal attached to the side of a larger Quartz.  Although 2 cm of the Tourmaline protrudes above the Quartz, its pink base exits the base of the specimen making the overall crystal length about 3.3 cm.  Both the Tourmaline and Quartz have a bright glossy lustre and the juxtaposition of the two colours greatly enhance one another.  A few small crystals of Lepidolite mica are attached to the Quartz crystal.  Please note the back of the Quartz is cleaved and a small section of the Tourmaline’s termination is chipped; however, the specimen remains terrific.
