An excellent and beautiful example of ‘Kidney Ore’ Hematite from the Egremont mining district in west Cumbria, England.  Once common when the iron mines were operating up to the early 1990s, these classic and much sought specimens are now proving ever increasingly scarce.  This fine and heavy specimen is composed from a vertically piled mound of botryoidal Hematite emanating from a 10 x 5 cm attachment area forming its base.  Around the point of attachment the radial, more fibrous nature of the Hematite can be observed.  The Hematite varies from steely grey with a satin lustre to chocolate-brick-red with a bright metallic lustre.  A great specimen of botryoidal Cumbrian Hematite.
