Ladywash mine lies north of the picturesque village of Eyam in Derbyshire, a village famous for its heroic self-isolation during the bubonic plague in 1665 during which 260 villagers died out of a total of 350, but so avoiding spread of the disease to the surrounding population. Ladywash mine is most famous for its excellent Fluorite with sulphide inclusions, but here we have something quite different, a well crystallised plate of creamy-white Baryte whose cockscomb blades are heavily dusted with micro-crystals of metallic silver Marcasite. Such specimens are not at all common and probably emanated from a localised section within this extensive underground mine. The cockscomb blades are gently curved and on average measure around 3 to 4 cm wide. A great Ladywash Baryte with Marcasite that will make a great addition to a Derbyshire or British collection.
