Cavnic mine is the most famous of all mines in the Cavnic district and this is one of the most famous ore deposits in the world. The town of Cavnic lies in Maramureș county in the extreme north of Romania and is the type locality to Rhodochrosite. This beautiful and impressive cabinet specimen is composed from a 13 x 7 cm matrix of massive pale pink Rhodochrosite, the entire top surface of which is encrusted with micro-crystalline light flamingo pink Rhodochrosite perforated all over by translucent milky white Quartz crystals of up to 1 cm tall and often dusted with a matt microcrystalline film of Chalcedony. Dusted over the whole of this surface are micro crystals of spherical white Calcite and glassy rhombic Dolomite. A most aesthetic combination specimen from Cavnic mine.
