Fluorite with Quartz var. Eisenkiesel

ID: CC19364
Unsurprisingly, many great Fluorite specimens have come out of the Wölsendorf Fluorite Mining District in Upper Palatinate, Germany, but purple fluorite was indeed rare in these mines and is not commonly seen in collections.  The beautiful example is built from intergrown cubic crystals of typically 2 to 2.5 cm on edge, with one exceptional crystal measuring 3.5 cm.  The Fluorite is an intensely deep purple, verging on black; is totally opaque and has a somewhat waxy, dullish-lustre.  Preferentially coating face aligned in one direction are tiny but perfect Quartz crystals with Hematite inclusions, of the variety Eisenkiesel.  These equant crystals are all around 1 mm with a bright lustre and dust the Fluorite cinnamon-reddish-brown.  The Fluorite does not fluoresce.  A choice specimen.
