This striking small miniature is a quite enchanting pseudomorph of light butterscotch-tan Calcite after sharp rhombohedral crystals of Dolomite. The specimen is from the Turț mine at Negrești-Oaș in Romania; a mine close to the village of Turț, the mine’s origins dating back to medieval times. Although the specimen is labelled as Calcite after Dolomite, it is likely it is ferroan Dolomite after Calcite, but clearly one carbonate replacing another. The hollow rhombic crystals measure up to 1.7 cm across and are delightfully crisp and sharp, each with a fascinating, protruding raised ‘wall’ long two edges of each of the larger crystals. A lovely specimen and one worthy of further investigation.
