This splendid large thumbnail is an intermixed mass of granular and crystalline Cinnabar with milky-white Quartz crystals. Cinnabar is mercury sulphide, and this specimen is a good example form the Nikitovka Hg Deposit in the Central Donbass district of the Ukraine, where mining stopped in 1994 after 109 years of production. The mercury was hosted in large sandstone bodies and was also present in associated coal seams. The Cinnabar forms dark blood-red interpenetrant trigonal crystals to about 5 mm and also occurs as granular masses, especially throughout its base where the Cinnabar is very rich. The Quartz forms milky-white terminated crystals to about 6 mm with a bright glassy lustre.
