Here at Crystal Classics, despite all the wonderful old collections we acquire, the rare and unusual mineral Mellite is one we don’t often see.  Mellite has a strange chemistry in that it is a metallic-organic compound containing aluminium and a carbon-oxygen molecule.  From the Csordakúti mine in Bicske-Csordakút, Hungary, two octagonal crystals are mounted on a clear acrylic base, the larger sitting on top of the smaller.  The backs of each crystal are incomplete from where they were attached to the matrix, remnants of which still adhere to the Mellite.  However, the display faces have perfect terminations and the larger crystal measures about 4.3 cm at its widest point.  The crystals are a mix of translucent glassy lemon-yellow with cloudy opaque cream interiors.  A striking example of this rare organic species which comes with two previous collector’s labels.
