Pearly-white Dolomite crystals of 2 to 4 mm, dusted terracotta and burnt carmine, are richly scattered over a flat plate of crystallised, apple-green Fluorite. This eye-catching miniature is from the Heißer Stein mine at Stulln in the Wölsendorf Fluorite Mining District of Upper Palatinate, Germany. The Fluorite forms compound crystals with quite amazing gently curved, concave faces, reminiscent of an array of parabolic mirrors; the James Webb Space Telescope springs to mind! These are composed from 1 to 2 mm cubic crystals which stack against adjacent crystals, each slightly rotated and so forming the parabolic surface. Quite remarkable. A superb and unusual Fluorite with Dolomite with the added advantage of being highly aesthetic.
