Linwu County, primarily a tin mining district, is in Hunan Province in south-east China and like so many Chinese localities produces an amazing variety of stunning minerals. This Fluorite with Calcite is both fabulous and unusual, quite different to any specimen most collectors will be familiar with. Cubic crystallised light lilac Fluorite forms an 8 cm tall stalactite over which radiating, hedgehog-like crystals of dog-tooth Calcite cover 75% of the sides and all the top. Quite spectacular! The Fluorite forms cubes to 1.9 cm on edge and the Calcite forms sharp scalenohedral crystals of similar length (i.e. 1.9 cm). The Calcite is creamy-white, often with an apricot-orange surface and coated in a sucrosic dusting of micro-Calcite crystals. Very different and delightful!
