This quite remarkable Calcite from the Příbram Mining District in the Czech Republic is eye-catching for its squat prismatic black crystals and terminations of a completely different colour and lustre. The largest crystal measures 1.8 x 1.0 x 0.8 cm and for all six major crystals, the glassy black prism faces seemingly wrap over and onto the periphery of the hexagonal, nail-head terminations. These then end, leaving visible the inner core of Calcite, containing inclusions of finely disseminated Pyrite. The Pyrite imparts a dull brassy hue and often turns a subtle iridescent speckled green. A delightful small miniature of a most peculiar, yet impressive habit.
