Tourmaline

ID: CC19950
This unusually coloured Tourmaline is from one of the pegmatite mines in San Diego County, California, USA, an area world famous for its magnificent gem minerals.  An ex-matrix miniature, the main crystal measures 4.3 cm long with vertically striated faces and a smooth, flat pinacoid termination.  A smaller, 2.2 cm long similar crystal sits at an angle on one side but this is not terminated.  The prisms are coloured a mixture of muddy and cloudy pale pinks and watery greens with occasional zones of almost colourless Tourmaline.  The prisms also appear to have been tectonically fractured and then re-healed over a succession of cycles which manifest as horizontal translucent cream narrow bands.
