Wow!!! What a Monster!!! And what an absolute beauty! I reckon this Calcite with Pyrite is one, if not the biggest specimen we’ve ever put in our twice weekly updates; it will certainly require a large box for shipping. From Uranium Mine No. 21 at Háje in the Príbram mining district of the Czech Republic, numerous scalenohedral Calcite crystals rise from a flat base with one forming a towering, cathedral-like spire, 17 cm tall. Two other distinctly individual crystals sit adjacent and all are surrounded by many other small (4 to 5 cm tall) scalenohedral Calcites. All crystals are preferentially coated; first with a continuous layer of micro-crystallised cubic Pyrite, then overlain by translucent dark grey nail-head Calcite crystals. The opposite sides of the large Calcite crystals (i.e. from the back of the specimen) are preferentially coated with rusty brown limonite. One fascinating feature is, one of the two second tallest Calcite scalenohedral crystals has been naturally cleaved at some stage, most probably a consequence of in situ tectonic disturbance (e.g. an earthquake). Yet when the later stage of nail-head Calcite deposition occurred, this slanted cleavage plane has been perfectly overgrown by an appropriately sized nail-head crystal. A stunning large cabinet/museum-size Calcite layered with Pyrite and nail-head Calcite from Príbram.
