Galena ps. after Pyromorphite
ID: CC20210
The Kautenbach mine at Kautenbach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is famous for its pseudomorphs of Galena after Pyromorphite. The degree of replacement can vary enormously at this locality and in this fine example, it would appear the majority of Pyromorphite remains, with just an early stage replacement of Galena occurring. The Pyromorphite forms blocky hexagonal crystals to about 1.5 cm and, in the main, looks to have only a thin surface replacement of dull lead-grey Galena. The Pyromorphite is a translucent pale mustard-yellow-green with a frosted glassy lustre when exposed. A classic specimen from this famous German mine.
