A superb and highly unusual specimen of Hematite pseudomorphing after Calcite from the Harz region of Lower Saxony, Germany.  Sharp, steeply terminated hexagonal former Calcite crystals to 6 cm tall are replaced with finely divided granular Hematite.  The Hematite produces smooth yet striated crystal faces which vary in colour from deep blackish-purple to a dark reddish-purple with an occasional earthy pink patina.  The intergrown crystals are sharply terminated, although the two dominant crystals have slight damage to their tips.  A wonderful pseudomorph from the Archduke Stefan Collection.

Ex. the Mineral Collection of Archduke Stephan Franz Viktor of Hungary (1817 to 1867), with a historic Archduke (Erzherzog) Stephan label incorporating his coat of arms.  This label measures 7.4 x 4.3 cm and has been trimmed along the left and right hand sides so completely losing these ornate borders, and across the base, loosing the lower half of this ornate border.  It does still retain the complete coat of arms and the catalogue number 400/58.  This label has been folded twice, resulting in two vertical creases, but remains clean and crisp with virtually no foxing.  A small Carl Rumpff label, dated 1889 is glued to one side of the specimen, but there is no attached Archduke catalogue number.  It is understood these labels were trimmed by curators at the Museum of Natural History of the Humboldt University in Berlin, to fit within their specimen boxes, after being bequeathed by Carl Rumpff’s widow in late 1889.  This specimen is accompanied with a beautifully hand written Carl Rumpff card label which measures 7.3 x 6.4 cm
