A miniature group of colourless Calcite crystals with a glassy lustre, from the St. Andreasberg mining district in the Harz Mountains of Lower Saxony, Germany.  The crystals range from stubby opaque milky-white to tall acicular semi-transparent crystals, measuring 4.4 cm tall.  A variety of Calcite crystal habits can be studied on this specimen, an interesting one being a flattened hexagonal platelet on the termination of one of the tallest crystals.

Ex. the Mineral Collection of Archduke Stephan Franz Viktor of Hungary (1817 to 1867), with a historic Archduke (Erzherzog) Stephan label incorporating his coat of arms.  This label measures 7.2 x 4.3 cm and has been trimmed across all four sides, losing ornate borders at the left and right. The label still retains the complete coat of arms and the catalogue number 75/375.  A small Carl Rumpff label, dated 1889 is glued to the specimen’s base, but there is no Archduke catalogue number attached.  It is understood these labels were trimmed by curators at the Museum of Natural History of the Humboldt University in Berlin, to fit within their specimen boxes, after being bequeathed by Carl Rumpff’s widow in late 1889.  This smaller sized Archduke label has minor foxing and one vertical crease.   The specimen comes with one of the unique thick green card boxes which the Archduke had specifically made to house the specimens.
