A great old timer from the St. Day mining district of the copper arsenate Olivenite, forming tapered acicular crystals to about 9 mm long richly scattered over a characteristic Cornish Quartz veinstone matrix.  Labelled in Archduke Stephan’s collection as from Redruth, this was the closest town to the arsenate-rich mining district in Gwennap, where the village of St. Day was to develop in future years.  The Olivenite tends to form as small sprays of acicular crystals that grade from deep olive-green to a lighter, vibrant apple-green towards their terminations.

Ex. the Mineral Collection of Archduke Stephan Franz Viktor of Hungary (1817 to 1867), with a historic Archduke (Erzherzog) Stephan label incorporating his coat of arms.  This label measures 6.8 x 4.3 cm and has been trimmed across the top and left and right sides.  The ornate borders are completely lost at the left and right and although retained across the top, part of the crown in the coat of arms is missing.  This label has the catalogue number 130/7.  A small label bearing this same number is glued to the base of the specimen together with a Carl Rumpff label, dated 1889.  It is understood these labels were trimmed by curators at the Museum of Natural History of the Humboldt University in Berlin, to fit within their specimen boxes, after being bequeathed by Carl Rumpff’s widow in late 1889.  The specimen comes with one of the unique thick green card boxes which the Archduke had specifically made to house the specimens.  This specimen is accompanied with two small old labels.
