ID: CC20391
Massive, brassy-golden Chalcopyrite and bright silver to lead-grey Galena form solid patches throughout a Quartz matrix from Pfaffenberg mine in the Harzgerode Mining District of Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.  The only euhedral crystals on the specimen are those of milky Quartz.  This specimen is unspectacular, but is a snapshot of material available at the time Archduke Stephan was building his collection.

Ex. the Mineral Collection of Archduke Stephan Franz Viktor of Hungary (1817 to 1867), with a historic Archduke (Erzherzog) Stephan label incorporating his coat of arms.  This originally small label measures 7.2 x 4.7 cm and has been trimmed at both sides, so losing the left and right ornate borders.  The catalogue number 460/57.  A small label bearing this same number is glued on one side of the specimen together with a Carl Rumpff label, dated 1889.  It is understood these labels were trimmed by curators at the Museum of Natural History of the Humboldt University in Berlin, to fit within their specimen boxes, after being bequeathed by Carl Rumpff’s widow in late 1889.
