Fluorite with Quartz

ID: CC20415
Perhaps the most iconic alpine mineral is pink Fluorite, a colour very rarely found around the world.  This gorgeous example is from Zinggenstöcke in the Grimsel area, about 75 km south-east of Bern in Switzerland.  The Fluorite forms three octahedral crystals, two of which are intergrown.  The largest measures approximately 2.5 x 2.5 x 2.0 cm and all are of a slightly burnt candy-pink, translucent and with frosted faces.  None of the octahedral forms are complete as they emerge from a glassy Quartz matrix together with part of a terminated Quartz crystal, this partly coated and included with olive-green chlorite.  The Fluorite crystals are heavily crazed internally and look splendid perched on top of the greenish Quartz.
