The first discovery of Tourmaline in the USA was made in Maine in the early 1820s. The Dunton Gem Quarry at Newry was founded in 1902 and has become one of Maine’s most famous gem localities, making specimens from here highly desirable and much sought after. This wonderful slightly bluish, lime green crystal is undoubtedly from Dunton because of its incredibly characteristic termination, where one of its three pyramidal faces is steeply inclined with a greatly elongated face covered in horizontal striations. The crystal shows no variation in colour save for changes in its shades of green and by the play of light on its internal complex reflective planes. This is a rare and wonderful Maine classic and will make a most enviable addition to any tourmaline, Maine, or USA collection!
