A wonderful and very well crystallised example of this strange occurrence of Baryte with Malachite from the Shangulow√© copper mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  This mine works a copper-cobalt deposit by the open cut method and despite its limited suite of minerals, those it does produce are very noteworthy specimens.  The occurrence of Baryte here is by far the best in this vast country.  The tabular Baryte crystals are very well formed, the largest measuring 3.0 x 2.8 x 0.9 cm and is even longer than 3 cm as it disappears beneath the overgrowth of Malachite.   The Baryte crystals are translucent colourless to grey, tinged slightly green by fine Malachite inclusions.  They have a glassy reflective lustre and horizontal sawtooth terminations formed from individual pointed triangular crystals.  The Baryte sits perfectly on top of a matrix of bright minty, bluish green botryoidal Malachite with a mainly matt lustre and smooth surface similar to a plastic coating!  This is a great combination specimen from the DRC in central Africa.
