A beautiful large cabinet or even museum-sized specimen of Galena on Fluorite and Chalcopyrite from Blackdene mine by the village of Ireshopeburn in Weardale, County Durham, England.  Producing only a limited suite of mineral species, Blackdene is famous as a producer of magnificently crystallised purple Fluorite and the lead sulphide, Galena. It is one of the oldest mines recorded in Weardale, dating to the early fifteenth century and possibly the 1300’s.  This specimen is dominated by a superb 7.4 x 4.5 x 4.0 cm composite Galena crystal of silvery lead grey, retaining a reasonably bright metallic lustre.  This perches on a roughly 19.7 x 11.0 cm bed of light lilac cubic Fluorite crystals richly dusted with 1 to 3 mm euhedral brassy Chalcopyrite crystals.  The quality and structure of the Galena is magnificent for both the locality and Weardale in general.  Set against the delicately coloured Fluorite and golden Chalcopyrite, the Galena produces a stunning specimen for display.  Under LWUV the Fluorite fluoresces bright purple and lilac in a mottled patchwork of varying shades.  This is a delightful specimen from one of Weardale’s most famous mines.
