The Papa Pocket (or Papa’s Pocket) was discovered close to the entrance to the Diana Maria mine by Diana Bruce’s father in 2019.  The Diana Maria mine works the Sutcliffe vein which crops out in the famous Rogerley quarry close to the village of Frosterley in Weardale, County Durham.  This museum-grade Fluorite specimen is encrusted with bright gemmy-emerald-green crystals, many occurring as magnificent interpenetrant twins, typically of elongated cubic habit with highly lustrous faces and razor-sharp edges.  The twins give credence to the general rule that twinned crystals are generally much larger than adjacent single crystals.  Rather fascinatingly, in direct daylight it is the twins which fluoresce bright blackberry-purple, but not the single crystals which remain emerald-green, indicating rare earth elements (REEs) have been concentrated in the twins rather than the single crystals.  This is a magnificent Weardale Fluorite which would grace the very finest of collections.
