Elbaite (Tourmaline)

ID: CC20673
This 11.5 cm long, double terminated pink Elbaite Tourmaline crystal is a turbulent mix of pink, red, gemmy, and translucent zones throughout, a combination that makes a majestic specimen.  It is from a recently discovered gem Tourmaline pocket found in the mining district of Coronel Murta in Minas Gerais, Brazil.  This single, ex-matrix crystal is terminated at one end by a bright and part-gemmy cherry-red trigonal pyramid with a bright glassy lustre. The opposite termination is a simple flat pinacoid with a matt, waxy lustre.  The Elbaite has developed with one flattened prism face to produce an isosceles triangular cross-section.  This flattened, broader face is the most transparent of the three, so providing a window into the prism along almost its entire length.  Another face is almost entirely translucent creamy sugar-candy-pink and the third is a mix of candy-pink feathered striations and smoother surface textures in a more gemmy deep cherry-red section.  This crystal has undergone three repairs following breakages during tectonic disturbance while in-situ, a common tendency with Tourmaline pockets. Each repair has been done by experts in crystal repair, rendering the breaks and repairs invisible.  The prism surface looks like brushed silk due of the densely of the very-finely striated faces.  An impressive Elbaite Tourmaline from Coronel Murta, Brazil.
