Elbaite (Tourmaline)

ID: CC20762
This ex-matrix, 5.5 cm tall Elbaite Tourmaline is from Coronel Murta in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and is one of those Tourmaline crystals which gradually reveals more and more as you study.  There is no doubt about it, the subtle way in which colour can vary within Tourmaline is second to none.  In summary, this crystal, starting at the base, grades from pink (a very thin band) through colourless, mottled sage-green with sky-blue, dark bottle green, aquamarine-green, leaf-green, light coral-pink and finally a honey-lemon termination.  It is beautiful!  Most of the crystal is transparent and gemmy yet shot through by very-fine wispy black hair-like inclusions, normal to the long axis.  The prism faces are deeply striated and the termination bifurcates to two joined, shallow-angled triclinic pyramids with a good glassy lustre.  A tremendous Elbaite Tourmaline from Coronel Murta.
