This remarkable Fluorite crystal is from Elmwood mine at Carthage in Tennessee, USA and is of a habit quite often encountered at this locality but seldom, if ever, anywhere else. The specimen takes the form of a large corner of one cubic Fluorite crystal, with its corner being optically ice-clear, containing no imperfections or inclusions and of quite remarkable gem quality. This abruptly changes to rich lavender Fluorite with a geometric pattern of slightly curved cubic patterned faces dusted with sparkling micro-crystals of colourless Quartz. Gazing into the pale lemon-tinged gemmy corner is like looking into a total void. The effect of seeing the interior surfaces and textures within the crystal feels as if there is nothing there in front, and it is quite astounding. Also, although the corner is obviously an integral part of the whole crystal, the gemmy yellow Fluorite projects back into the crystal’s centre as a steep-sided naturally-etched triclinic pyramid. It must be seen to be fully appreciated. An amazing and wonderfully aesthetic Fluorite from Elmwood mine.
