The village of Cleator Moor lies halfway between the west Cumbrian towns of Frizington and Egremont and had several iron ore mines in close proximity, including Cleator Moor mine and Crowgarth mine.  This magnificent, museum quality Hematite is from one of this group of mines and is stunning for the quality of the Hematite, its arresting lustre and its structural habit.  Kidney Ore is a variety of Hematite named for its close resemblance to kidneys, often showing a remarkable similarity in terms of size, reniform habit and even colour.  It is a fibrous mamillated form, wherein the radial fibres terminate to create gently curved, undulating metallic surfaces, usually smooth and lustrous.  This large cabinet size specimen is solid Kidney Ore, with its upper surface highly polished and lustrous, jet-black in colour with just hints of blended deep red.  The specimen forms a shell like layer or crust, of a remarkably uniform thickness 3 cm all around, this 3 cm deep zone exhibiting the radial fibrous structure, perpendicular to the surface.  The term fibrous possibly implies fissile or friable, but this could not be further from reality, as the fibres are tightly, chemically bonded metallic structures of iron oxide.  The inside surface is an undulating expanse of polished concave shallow hemispheres, formerly the interface between this layer and a previous inner reniform surface, now disappeared.  This surface displays a transition from almost black through to dark chocolate-cherry.  This is an extraordinary example of high quality west Cumbrian Hematite which, if displayed, will captivate and enthral.
