This outstanding specimen of gem-quality Fluorite is from the recently (summer 2020) excavated Helen’s Pocket in Lady Annabella mine at Eastgate, Weardale.  An ironstone matrix is entirely covered with superb interpenetrant twinned Fluorite crystals of a gorgeous, understated leaf-green, a colour quite characteristic of this pocket.  The pocket is named for Helen Wilkinson, a well-known local collector who has done much excellent work to advance British topographical mineralogy. Almost all the crystals are ice-clear, are wonderfully gemmy and have a bright lustre.  The largest twin measures 2.3 cm on its longest edge and most crystals are over 1 cm.  The crystal faces are mirror-flat with most displaying fine, concentric rectangular growth patterns, probably measuring only atoms deep, but enough to interfere with incident light.  In sunlight (very dull sunlight here in Somerset today) the crystals fluoresce royal purple at differing intensities, the largest twin reacting most and look magnificent.  An excellent Fluorite specimen from the remarkable Lady Annabella mine.
