A slender mottled-pink Elbaite Tourmaline crystal, 5.8 cm tall emerges from a tangled nest of intergrown bright bubble gum pink small Elbaite crystals, from a recently discovered gem Tourmaline pocket found in the mining district of Coronel Murta in Minas Gerais, Brazil.  The main Elbaite crystal is a jumbled mix of translucent cranberry-red and rose-pink with cloudy zones of creamy sugar candy-pink.  This crystal terminates with a simple flat pinacoid, with a smooth face and waxy lustre.  It first appears to have been bruised on two edges, but the presence of sub-mm milky Quartz crystals overgrowing one such area proves this to be natural.  This crystal emerges from a 5.5 x 3.8 x 2.5 cm mat of intergrown candy-pink Elbaite prisms, typically 0.5 to 1.5 cm long and varying from broad stubby prisms to narrow acicular crystals.  The back surface (some may consider this the display surface) of this Elbaite mat is almost entirely encrusted with double terminated opaque, snow-white milky Quartz crystals, nearly all in parallel or sub-parallel alignment and measuring up to 2 cm long. This crystal has undergone two repairs following breaks during tectonic disturbance while in-situ, a common tendency with Tourmaline pockets.  These repairs have been done by experts in this field, rendering them almost invisible.  The main crystal’s prism faces are finely to coarsely striated with silky and glassy respective lustres.  A splendid Elbaite Tourmaline with a most attractive matrix of Elbaite and Quartz from Coronel Murta in Brazil.
