The N'Chwaning mines at Kuruman, in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa have many iconic minerals, one of which is the rare calcium-iron sulphate Sturmanite and crystals of this species do not get much better than this spectacular specimen. Perched on a shard-like thick sliver of quartzite matrix is a 5.4 x 3.0 x 2.8 cm toffee-yellow Sturmanite crystal of quite magnificent proportions, a unique size for the species, the likes of which is very rarely seen. The crystal is hexagonal, double terminated and contacts the matrix along two of its prism faces. The prism body is a pagoda-like tower of alternating Sturmanite troughs and ridges, forming sawtooth ripples long and perpendicular to each face. The opposite terminations are flattened, slightly raised pyramids, each with a hexagonal pinacoid at the apex. Whereas the prism faces are a matt sepia-mustard, the terminations are a lustrous acrid, acidic mustard-lemon crazed with bright lemon veins. Although the ribbed prism faces can appear dull, once well-lit they adopt a glassy translucent luminescence of golden syrup-yellow. On one other corner a pair of 1 cm wide fanned Sturmanite crystals form a butterfly-shaped cluster. This specimen comes with a custom-made computer milled circular acrylic stand with backing support column. The specimen sits vertically with the tip of the matrix in the contoured recess and the Sturmanite crystal sitting slightly angled from the horizontal at the top. Without any doubt whatsoever, this is a museum quality Sturmanite of spectacular appearance.
