Mention Tsumeb and Dioptase soon springs to mind, as it is perhaps the most iconic mineral from this amazing mine. During the initial years of mining, Dioptase, a copper silicate, was exceedingly rare and it was not until the mine had reached a depth at around 840 m close to 30 Level that specimens became more abundant. Dioptase is typically associated with Calcite at Tsumeb, albeit occurring in several specific morphologies. This beautiful specimen is of the type where smaller Dioptase crystals overgrow rhombohedral Calcite crystals, aligned to their rhombohedral symmetry, either on the Calciteā€™s surface where the Dioptase is surrounded by a band of Calcite or then overgrown by Calcite and hence included within it. This 11.5 x 7.5 cm plate is covered with semi-transparent, colourless tinged fawn-cream Calcite crystals to typically 1.5 cm on edge and with a rich coverage of bluish-turquoise-green sub-mm Dioptase crystals as a sugar-like orientated coating. An excellent example of this well know relationship between Dioptase and Calcite at Tsumeb.
