Covering a pale burnt apricot matrix of granular iron-rich altered limestone, this excellent group of light straw-yellow to rich, tangy citrus lemon-yellow fluorite crystal is a most representative example from the Harvest Pocket at Lady Annabella mine, a pocket named for the autumnal colours found within this small mineralised cavity. The two largest crystals measure 2.8 x 2.3 x 2.2 cm and 1.7 x 1.7 x 1.4 cm, with the larger forming an interpenetrant twin with a 1.6 x 1.4 x 1.2 cm elongate cube. The larger crystals are quite gemmy whereas the smaller straw to colourless cubes become ever increasingly cloudy and opaque. Many of the more transparent crystals, including the largest, have certain faces and edges about 6 mm deep which contain intricately interlaced colour bands between yellow and lavender. These are subtle, but under low magnification I can count 16 bands within this 6 mm wide zone! Under LWUV the entire specimen fluoresces bright lavender and lilac, with the crystal edges emitting a bright lavender fluorescent framework which contains square and rectangular deeper lilac face centres.

The Lady Annabella mine began specimen recovery operations in July 2020 within the former Eastgate Quarry, previously known as the Blue Circle Cement Quarry. This quarry began in the early 1960s, working an exposure of the Great Limestone, a major formation of Carboniferous age (Pendleian Substage), found across much of Northern England. Following uplift and fracturing, subsequent Fluorite mineralisation pervaded this area of County Durham, in the form of sub-vertical veins and near-horizontal metasomatic flats. Metasomatism is the chemical alteration of rock by hydrothermal fluids. Over the past 55 years, Fluorite from this quarry has become famous amongst collectors for its wide range of colours, colour variations and zonation. In just its first five months of operation, the Lady Annabella mine has produced a magnificent range of Fluorite specimens, many of which are colour variants and mixtures never before seen at this locality, nor even in the other famous mines throughout the Weardale Valley.
