The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa and the Kolwezi mining district lies to its far mid-south. This superb specimen of Chrysocolla pseudomorphing after Malachite pseudomorphing after Azurite with Quartz is from the Tenke-Fungurume area and is from a find made in about 2018. These are a lot of successions of pseudomorphing to get your head around. Hence the basic crystal morphology of this small cabinet specimen is that of Azurite blades, the largest forming a spear-like structure 5 cm tall. Where the brilliant sky blue Chrysocolla has not completely replaced the mid-generation emerald green Malachite, the latter is visible around the base and in pseudomorphed crystals where their terminations are removed. The final stage of mineral deposition was a complete coating of micro-crystallised colourless Quartz which make the Chrysocolla sparkle and dramatically intensifies its colour. A showy and highly aesthetic Chrysocolla pseudomorph.
