What makes this Harmotome specimen special is that it once resided in the collection of Archduke Stephan of Austria, one of Europe’s most famous collectors and whose regal-looking labels are highly sought.  Harmotome is a rare zeolite and forms snow-white glassy crystals to about 1 cm in a cream and pinkish-tan matrix from Strontian, North West Highlands, Scotland.  This specimen has a good coverage of crystals and is quite typical for the location.  Two old labels accompany it, one handwritten on card stating (in German) “Harmotome, Strontian, Scotland” and of unknown origin. The Archduke label is complete and measures 9.9 x 8.1 cm.  These labels were often severely trimmed by an over-zealous curator at the Berlin Museum to fit into smaller boxes, but this is one that was spared this process!  The label has one vertical central fold and although a little discoloured, is a fine example.  The label records the catalogue number 260/2, and this same number is affixed to the base of the specimen on a small paper label.  This specimen also comes with a 9.8 x 9.8 x 1.9 cm green card tray made especially for the Archduke’s collection.  A splendid historic specimen and label of a classic Scottish mineral.
