The Bypass Pocket was discovered during 2020 while mining continued at Diana Maria mine during the year now more infamous for the Covid-19 pandemic!  It’s just as well some of this year’s magnificent mineralogical finds have cast their spell to brighten our lives!  The Diana Maria mine is just west of the village of Frosterley in Weardale.  Fluorite from this find is easily recognised by the intensely dark purple daylight fluoresce of the large interpenetrant twinned crystals which sit on a bed of smaller single intergrown Fluorites.  This is a museum quality Fluorite crowned by two superb deep grassy-emerald-green interpenetrant twinned crystals, the larger of the two measuring up to 2.5 cm on edge.  Both the single and twinned crystals on this specimen have good transparency and are mainly gemmy, with a waxy lustre grading to glassy in parts.  The twins attain 4 cm across overall and fluoresce in both natural and artificial light.  In daylight their intensity turns them deep blackberry-purple and these contrast beautifully against the surrounding nickel-emerald-green single crystals.  Under LW Ultraviolet all crystals fluoresce an intense blue-lilac with brilliant lavender-white rims.  A Bypass Pocket Fluorite of superb quality and aesthetics.
