The Lüderich mine near Altenbrück in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, was probably worked for lead and zinc as far back as Roman times, but its main production commenced in 1853 and eventually the mine closed in 1978.  This terrific example of a spinel law twinned Galena probably dates from the mid to late nineteenth century judging from the accompanying W. Maucher, München, label.  A jumble of cubic and modified cuboctahedral Galena crystals cover a 4.5 x 2.5 cm matrix, from which rises a 3 x 2 x 0.6 cm spinel twin, as parallel pseudo-hexagonal plates of dull lead-grey Galena lightly dusted with an earthy white to pale lemon coating.  This is a great Galena spinel law twin from the Lüderich mine.
