The Mina Tiro Estrella Quartz locality in the Capitan Mountains of New Mexico is a well-known locality for having produced many of the best Japan Law twin Quartz crystals in the USA. This splendid example from the Dr Josef Clemente Collection is a superb flattened smoky Japan Law twin measuring 3.4 x 4.1 cm in area and of an excellent transparency verging on gemmy. The base of the twin has a little snow-white Feldspar matrix attached, possibly Microcline, and is framed by perfect bevelled terminations. The prism faces are heavily striated and, as a twinned pair, the striations join to form an attractive herringbone pattern. This is a super example of a North American Japan Law Quartz twin from a classic location.
