This magnificent Rhodochrosite is from the Cassandra Mines in Central Macedonia, Greece, a locality with only four recorded mineral species and mined for Pyrite. Occurring with the Pyrite was Calcite, Quartz and Rhodochrosite, and from my knowledge specimens from here don’t get much better than this. A roughly 14 x 12 cm plate of delicate strawberry ice cream pink Rhodochrosite crystals forms the most striking spiky cluster with a silky lustre and predominantly sharply terminated crystals of between 1 and 2 cm tall. Occasional Rhodochrosite crystals display a hollow central core with a circular toroidal termination. The dense coverage of crystals shows no sign of any damage, making this a truly superb specimen for display.
