Liroconite, a hydrated copper aluminium arsenate hydroxide, carries a kudos within Cornish collections that no other species, no matter how rare, can muster.  Add a cluster of Clinoclase to the specimen and wow, you have a real winner in your hands!  This lovely specimen is just at the upper limit of what would be termed a miniature and is from the type locality for both Liroconite and Clinoclase, the ancient and world famous Wheal Gorland.  Nowadays Wheal Gorland is usually recorded as being in the village of St. Day, just east of Redruth, but in its heyday, St. Day did not yet exist and it was simply recorded as the Parish of Gwennap.  A roughly 5 x 2 cm area of cyan blue Liroconite crystals averaging between 1 and 2 mm partly coat a light brown-tan gossan matrix through which a further five bands of Liroconite traverse.  There is another approximately 2.5 x 0.8 cm area of Liroconite crystals on the base of the specimen.  Perched amongst the Liroconite on the display face is a 4 mm “acorn” of crystallised Clinoclase of intensely dark greenish Prussian blue.  A beautiful Liroconite with Clinoclase from Wheal Gorland.
