It’s easy to forget just how good Chalcopyrite can be and this beautiful large miniature is an apt reminder from the Friedrich-Wilhelm mine at Biersdorf, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The specimen forms an isosceles triangle-shaped display face entirely covered with excellent, brassy metallic golden Chalcopyrite crystals of up to 1.5 cm tall. The crystals tend to be heavily striated, often forming chevroned patterns where two faces meet. The base is a much brighter gold where it has been split from a larger Chalcopyrite matrix. An aesthetic Chalcopyrite from the famous Friedrich-Wilhelm mine accompanied by the previous German collector’s label.
