This excellent Smoky Quartz-lined geode, containing a 6 cm long infilling of superbly crystallised acicular Goethite, is from the volcanic area of Freisen in the district of Sankt Wendel, Germany. This locality is famous for its agate and lies 20 km southwest of Idar-Oberstein, the town world-famous for its lapidary and gemstone expertise and history. The geode measures 10.3 x 12.2 x 7.0 cm and is completely lined with transparent and translucent, colourless to light smoky stubby Quartz crystals of typically 6 to 10 mm across, frequently included with acicular needles of Goethite. To one side, four intergrown, three-dimensional sprays of magnificent acicular Goethite form interlocked botryoidal mounds to 2 cm high and 3 cm in diameter. Where these sprays have been split open on cracking the geode, their internal radiating structure is superbly revealed, showing graphite-grey to black, tight acicular rosettes. A few such specimens are shown on mindat, but this is far superior to any. A gorgeous specimen from a rarely seen location and ex. the Dr Joseph Clemente (1899-1987) Collection of southern Germany.
