This beautiful and elegant combination of Smoky Quartz, Feldspar, Schorl and Muscovite, all set on a fine-grained pegmatite, is from the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil.  This state is particularly rich in gem minerals, many of which originate in granite pegmatite deposits, these being the late-stage crystallisation phase of the granite melt where all the more exotic metals are concentrated to a level where they can form the wonderful specimens this region of Brazil is famous for.  The outstanding feature of this specimen is a 9.5 x 2.6 x 2.4 cm Smoky Quartz crystal which stands vertically on a near-vertical face of pale salmon-pink Feldspar.  The Quartz is transparent with a hexagonal cross-section and parallel prism faces.  The termination extends for 3.3 cm between the prism and its tip, with the faces gently curving toward the apex.  The crystal contains black (or very dark) inclusions of an unknown species in both granular and acicular habits.  The Feldspar appears to be Albite, as it forms a scaley surface of curved, convex platy crystals with an attractive satin lustre.  Small smoky Quartz crystals also emerge from the matrix in places, in parallel alignment to the main crystal.  Topping the matrix are about four black Schorl Tourmaline crystals, the longest measuring 4 cm, although none of these are terminated.  The back face reveals the pegmatitic fabric, rich in both greyish Quartz and hexagonal books of platy silver-tan Muscovite mica.  A splendid Smoky Quartz with a typical associated pegmatite mineralogy from Minas Gerais and ex. the Dr Joseph Clemente (1899-1987) Collection of southern Germany.
